What are the advantages of using laser edge sealing?

Laser edge sealing technology emerged around the 1980s and began to gain global popularity in 2014. Laser edge sealing is a high-end edge sealing process that uses laser technology to treat the edges of the panels. Compared with traditional EVA hot melt adhesive sealing or PUR sealing, it has significant advantages in many aspects, especially being more suitable for high-end furniture customization and high-quality panel processing.

1. Seamless connection, high overallity.

Traditional edge sealing requires applying glue, and after cooling, a slight glue line or overflow glue may occur on the glue layer; laser edge sealing directly heats the special heat-melting layer on the back of the edge sealing strip, causing the edge sealing strip and the board to adhere tightly instantly. It can achieve complete absence of glue lines, presenting a completely seamless and gap-free connection effect visually. This also makes the surface of the edge sealing strip more flat, without unevenness caused by uneven thickness of the glue layer.

II. Durability and Environmental Friendliness

The laser edge sealing strips have better chemical properties compared to traditional ones, with superior waterproof and moisture-proof capabilities. The adhesive layer of traditional edge sealing may crack or fall off due to prolonged exposure to moisture, but the thermal fusion layer of the laser edge sealing and the material between the edge sealing strip and the board form a molecular-level structure, providing extremely strong sealing performance. Water vapor and moisture are difficult to reach the interior of the board, effectively preventing edge expansion, mold growth, and effectively extending the lifespan of the furniture.

Strong anti-aging ability. The thermal fusion material of the laser edge sealing has higher stability and can withstand high and low temperatures (-40℃ - 150℃). It is less likely to fall off or crack due to temperature changes, and avoids the aging problems of additives and curing agents in traditional adhesives. It lasts longer.

Environmental friendliness upgrade. Traditional edge sealing adhesives such as EVA may contain harmful substances like formaldehyde, but the laser edge sealing does not require additional glue and has a majority of environmentally friendly polymer materials (such as TPU) in its thermal fusion layer. There is no glue volatilization during production, which complies with E0 level or higher environmental standards, and is suitable for scenarios with high environmental requirements such as children's rooms and bedrooms.

III. Efficiency and Adaptability

High processing efficiency. Laser edge sealing does not require waiting for the glue to cure. After sealing, the subsequent processing can be carried out directly. The production line speed can reach 20-60 meters per minute (compared to about 10-20 meters per minute for traditional PUR edge sealing), suitable for large-scale customized production, and shortens the delivery cycle.

Compatible with various types of boards and edge sealing strips. Whether it is particleboard, fiberboard, multi-layer board or solid wood board, they can all be used. Especially for smooth surface boards (such as acrylic), the effect is better. In the processing of arcs, inclined edges, and irregular edges, it is more convenient and proficient than traditional edge sealing, and can precisely fit R-angles, round corners, inclined edges, trapezoidal edges and other complex shapes. Some laser edge sealing, if silver ion antibacterial agent is added, can achieve antibacterial effects.

Edge sealing strips support ABS, PVC, PET, solid wood veneer, etc.

Laser edge sealing technology, with its features of "no adhesive lines, high sealing performance, long durability, and ultra-environmental friendliness", has redefined the craftsmanship standards for high-end furniture. It particularly demonstrates significant advantages in scenarios that emphasize ultimate aesthetics and quality. As equipment costs gradually decrease and technologies become more widespread, it is expected to become one of the mainstream directions for edge sealing processes in custom furniture in the future.
